Happy World Vegan Day! Whether you are vegan or not, what matters is that you’re hungry. Join us for lunch?

Happy World Vegan Day! To celebrate, I’ll let you in on a spectacular new vegan joint in Sydney. Suzy Spoon began her career as a vegan butcher by selling her homemade vegan burgers, sausages, pies, and schnitzels at Marrickville’s weekly earth and animal-friendly markets. Her meatless goods were such a success that Spoon opened a storefront in Enmore, only to move again a few months later due to increasing demand.

The Vegetarian Butcher’s awesome new digs are located at King Street and Queen Street in Newtown. Foot traffic from bustling King Street paired with the Butcher’s delicious range of meat-free sandwiches, burgers, salads, and take-home sausages, patties, rashers, etc. ensure the shop is always busy. In addition to their homemade range of savory delights, the Vegetarian Butcher sources vegan cupcakes and a few other sweet items from Socially Vegan Cakes.

Another tip for any ‘vego’ Sydneysiders: stop by the Cruelty Free Festival this Sunday in Belmore Park for over 60 vegan food and beverage stalls. I’ll be there all day, methodically making my way to every vendor and eating vegan treats like it’s my job.

For me, the best vegan food is vegan food that everyone can enjoy. According to a statistical study back in June, approximately 1 million Americans are vegan, which makes up about 0.003% of the entire American population. Yet vegan restaurants are sprouting up in major cities hoping to provide healthy food to anyone open and willing to eat it. And while some omnivores may shy away from fake meats and daiya ‘cheese’, there are some places that offer food that no one can resist.

Scoops is a tiny place in Lefferts Garden where you can get one of the most filling lunches in the entire city. And because Scoops adheres to a Rastafari, or ital, diet, everything is vegan. Just choose the $7 or $10 size, and your take-out box will be generously filled with scoops of soulful Caribbean food, from rice and beans to lo mein to lentils to greens to even vegan barbecue. Going to Scoops reminds me of my own childhood, when my parents would take me to a tiny Filipino lunch counter in Carson, Los Angeles, and I would happily feed my mouth and my soul. And that’s what food, vegan or not, has the power of doing. Scoops just happens to be vegan, and I’m quite grateful for it. (They have ice cream, too.)
